Low placenta
When I had my 20 week baby scan, the midwife said the placenta was ‘a bit low’ and I’d need more scans later to keep an eye on it? Should I be worried?
Nat, Sunderland
The medical term for a low-lying placenta is Placenta Praevia. In minor grades, only the lower edge of the placenta is lying a bit low in the womb. In serious grades, the lower edge can cover the cervix. The more serious grades can lead to recurrent painless bleeds from around 32 weeks onwards. So you will be offered further scans to look at the placenta as you approach 32 weeks.
Backache
Since I started an office job, I’ve had lots of backache. I used to work in a shop, where I lifted stuff and I was fine. What should I do? I love my new job. Fran, Middlesex
Prolonged sitting or standing, and heavy lifting can all cause low back pain. With sitting, the main problem is sitting upright or forward, and not changing position. Sitting upright with the hips at 90 degrees is bad for the discs of the lower spine. If you need to sit at a workstation for long periods, stand up and move around often. Ask your supervisor about a workplace assessment.
Heartburn pain
I get terrible heartburn if I bend over or lie down. I take loads of antacid tablets, but they don’t stop it happening. What can I do to settle it down?
Sharon, Preston
Heartburn is a common symptom, caused by stomach acid running up into the oesophagus. It’s more common in overweight people, smokers, and those who drink a lot of alcohol. Missed meals and late eating are commonly at fault, especially if the food is spicy or accompanied by lots of fizzy drinks. If these lifestyle issues ring a bell, then making a few changes will help a lot. Also, try Gaviscon instead of antacids, as this also helps keep acid in the stomach. If it’s still a frequent problem, see your doctor for advice.
