Lactose is a sugar found naturally in milk and other dairy products, like cheese and yogurt. Some people lack the enzyme that breaks down lactose and this can cause bloating, wind, and other tummy troubles. This is known as lactose intolerance and it affects around five per cent of the UK, but is more common in people of some ethnic origins. It can be mild, or severe, and treatment can mean avoiding trigger foods, or your GP may recommend supplements. There are lots of lactose-free alternatives out there, too.
